The Charter

King James granted a charter to the Virginia Company of London so they could establish a colony in Jamestown. The charter was a document that stated that England would support a new colony for a while and the colonists would be granted the same rights as the people living in England at the time.

New groups and organizations often have a charter that gives guidelines for the group. It states what they will do, how they will go about accomplishing the task and and rules they need to follow.

Here is what the beginning of the charter granted to the Virginia Company of London looked like:

Comment:
If you were to write a charter to establish a new colony, what would you include?  In your comment, write the first part of the charter as you think it should be.
