Cultural Landscapes of Virginia

The Scots-Irish, English and Germans immigrated into Virginia. They brought with them their own cultures, ideas and beliefs as well as foods and the architecture of buildings.  See the pictures below and complete the cultural landscape sheet using these pictures for help.

The Irish Barns, homes and churches were white in color with thatched roofs. The wood beams were not exposed.

The English barns, homes and churches were tan in color with thatched roofs. The wood beams were exposed.

The German barns, homes and churches were white in color with red brick or stone roofs and the wooden beams were exposed.

COMMENT: COMPARE AND CONTRAST THESE HOMES, BARNS AND CHURCHES WITH THOSE WE HAVE TODAY!

  1. Their homes and barns: most of them have thatched roofs, their wood beams were exposed and you can see them.

Our homes and barns:Most of the houses have more color in them, most of them don't thatched roofs, and you can't see the wood beams.

  15. A few differences between these buildings and buildings today are that if any of these pictures are of churches, then unlike churches today, there are none of the big, colorful, fancy windows. Also the houses are not colorful like some of the ones today. Dispite the differences these buildings look very similar to ones today.

  17. English buildings didn't have many decorations, nor color.
German buildings were nearly touching the clouds!
    Irish buildings were usually white.
Buildings today usually have color, decorations, and they probably aren't as high as the sun!
